He ends up in California, which is no longer a state of the union, but a country unto its own. Searching for clues as to Ginger's whereabouts, Yearless meets up with Fred Golling, a quantum physicist attempting to break an alien code discovered in his lab in 1977. There is controversy, doubt and suspicion on both sides as to how men from the past could venture into the future. Continuing his search, Yearless pushes up through the strange new California all the way to his cabin outside Redding where he learns things are not as they seem at all.
