THE YOUNG DREAMERS In America's Public Schools
A retiree from the California public school system describes her encounters with a sample of ten young Latino children from families in a low socio-economic class in a suburb of California. She believes most or all of these children were recent and illegal arrivals in the United States (see text). Thus, in the current lexicon, they were “Dreamers.” During her 37-year career she entered their homes and their classrooms. Their stories provide an intimate and meaningful window into the culture and conditions of low-income Latino families as well as the teachers and schools that serve them. It is the author’s hope that these stories will contribute to a much-needed insight into some of the issues that affect these children, their schools, their parents, and their respective cultures. Minor changes are made for the sake of privacy but the unaltered truth of each story remains. The author ends with meaningful observations and recommendations.
