October, 1941: Japan's saber-rattling has thus far been confined to the Chinese mainland and Indochina. The China Clipper is still flying her Far East routes and Pan American World Airways needs an experienced mechanic to head-up its Pacific Fleet's maintenance facility at Cavite City, Manila Bay, Philippines. Benjamin Franklin Edwards is that man. Displaced from his home in Illinois farm country by an abusive stepfather, Ben makes the Horace Greeley trek West, joins Pan Am and ultimately travels across the seas to Manila,the Pearl of the Orient. The fledgling mechanic's adventures, from his apprenticeship under a kindly senior Pan Am mechanic at Treasure Island, to his bivouac at Pan American's base at Pearl Harbor, to a whirlwind romance aboard the USS President Cleveland bound for the Far East, and then on to the hard work and high living of Pre-war Manila, are nothing compared to what fate has in store for him as a 'guest' of the Japanese at the infamous Los Baños prisoner of war camp.. P.O.W.-A PHILIPPINE ODYSSEY is a novel built on a solid foundation of factual events. It is a story of wartime romance and excitement, of the valor and the tragedy of war, and of its life and death struggles. It is also a story of the trauma war inflicts on those who fight it.
