Over 900 Catholic priests served as chaplains to the British armed forces in the Second World War. In 1944 Pope Pius XII described all military chaplains as 'No Ordinary Shepherds' because they were fulfilling their priestly vocation and looking after the spiritual needs of their 'flocks' in extraordinary circumstances and conditions. This book examines their role, describes their experiences and analyses their effectiveness as they ministered to those who sought God's protection in battle.
