Incarcerated: A Memoir
My career with the Department of Corrections began in 1988. I was one of the first Black officers in the field of corrections in Wisconsin. Remember, this was just 24 years after the passing of the Civil Rights Act, and for many towns, the passing of that Act hadn't changed much over those two decades. The Sundown town where I was to start my career hadn't seen many people like me, except those who were incarcerated in the town's state prison, and the rest of us weren't welcome there. Incarcerated is a memoir of my experience as a Black, female correctional sergeant within a town, a system and a time that wasn't ready for me.
