Fragoso Rivera presenta la versión editada de su tesis doctoral, la cual trata sobre el proceso político que llevó al Partido Autonomista Histórico, Puro u Ortodoxo a convertirse en el Partido Republicano Puertorriqueño. En la obra se destaca la figura de José Celso Barbosa, como líder negro y de origen pobre, que se encargó de transformar el sentimiento autonomista de su partido a uno dirigido a la anexión con los Estados Unidos.
