What the Heck are “Bull Goggles”? Have you ever been at a bar and had a few too many cocktails? Reality starts becoming a little skewed. You gain confidence. In these over-hyped and enthusiastic environments, we often hear statements like: “I’ve made a boatload of money on this tech stock…I don’t know what they do, but if it keeps doing this I can probably retire right now!” “I’m sick of watching Bitcoin takeoff. I’m taking out a home equity loan and going all in!” “This isn’t hard. Just throw a dart and you make money.” “I’m going to shut down my business to start day-trading tech stocks!” “2008 was a once in a lifetime event. There won’t be any more crashes like that.” A student of market history witnessed over and over again: rising markets, overconfidence, exuberance, high expectations, too much risk, even fearlessness and a market that falls back to reality leading to panic, people hoarding cash, “swearing off” stocks and not getting involved again until their confidence becomes over-inflated once again.
